Protein Info for b3603 in Escherichia coli BW25113

Name: lldP
Updated annotation (from data): (R)-lactate / (S)-lactate / glycolate:H+ symporter LldP
Rationale: This protein is annotated by EcoCyc as transporting both stereoisomers of lactate and glycolate, which is consistent with our genetic data and a more detailed study (PMID:11785976). The previous study found that yghK (glcA) also transported glycolate and was important for glycolyate utilization. We instead observed a very subtle defect of the glcA mutant during growth on glycolate (fitness = -0.5).
Original annotation: L-lactate permease (NCBI)

These analyses and tools can help you predict a protein's function, but be skeptical. For enzymes, over 10% of annotations from KEGG or SEED are probably incorrect. For other types of proteins, the error rates may be much higher. MetaCyc and Swiss-Prot have low error rates, but the best hits in these databases are often quite distant, so this protein's function may not be the same. TIGRFam has low error rates. Finally, many experimentally-characterized proteins are not in any of these databases. To find relevant papers, use PaperBLAST.
